Online Marriage for Filipino Couples

Can a Filipino couple get married online?
Here's the honest version. If both of you stay in the Philippines and marry over a video call under Philippine law alone, that marriage isn't valid. The Family Code still requires both people to appear in person before the person solemnizing the marriage, and the Virtual Marriage Act that would have changed this never passed.
A Utah online marriage works differently. The ceremony is legally celebrated in Utah, where marrying by video is a normal, recognized process, and the Philippines generally treats a valid foreign marriage as valid at home under Article 26 of the Family Code. We say generally on purpose. Recognition depends on registering the marriage with your consulate and on the rules in force when you file, so this page walks through what that actually takes.
About that Utah notice
Since May 6, 2026, Utah asks the officiant to read a short notice that a marriage like this may be invalid in the country where the couple lives. Don't let that line rattle you. It's a general caution Utah reads to everyone marrying from abroad, not a ruling about your case. For Filipino couples, the path to recognition at home runs through the consular Report of Marriage, which is what the rest of this page is about.
Most of the Filipino couples we marry are apart on the day they say yes. One partner is an OFW on a contract in the Gulf or working on a ship, the other is home in the province. A fiance is finishing a visa abroad while the wedding date can't wait. A video ceremony through Utah lets you marry on a day you're both free, wherever each of you happens to be sitting, and then you bring that marriage home through your consulate.
How the Utah route works
You apply for the marriage license online with Utah County. There's no residency requirement and no waiting period, so a couple with no ties to Utah can use it. The ceremony is held by video with a licensed Utah officiant and two witnesses, who can join from anywhere. Once the marriage is recorded, Utah issues a certified marriage certificate. That certificate is the document you take to the Philippine consulate that covers Utah to file a Report of Marriage, which is how the marriage gets registered with the Philippine Statistics Authority back home.
A purely online Philippine wedding isn't valid
This is the part couples get wrong, so it's worth being blunt. Under the Family Code of the Philippines, a marriage needs both people to appear in person before the officiant. A wedding held entirely over video, under Philippine law, doesn't meet that requirement, which makes it void. Congress considered a Virtual Marriage Act that would have allowed online ceremonies, but it never became law. So if a service tells you it can marry two people in the Philippines by Zoom under Philippine law, that marriage won't hold up. How the Philippines generally recognizes a Utah marriage
Article 26 of the Family Code says a marriage validly celebrated abroad is generally valid in the Philippines too. A Utah video ceremony is celebrated in Utah under Utah law, so it fits that rule. The word that matters is generally. Recognition isn't automatic the moment your certificate prints. It becomes real at home when you file a Report of Marriage with the Philippine consulate that covers Utah, which then registers the marriage with the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Two things to sort out before you plan
There's no divorce in the Philippines. A divorce bill passed the House in 2024 but lapsed without becoming law, so annulment and recognition of a foreign divorce are still the only routes for Filipino citizens. Go in knowing that.
Same-sex marriages are treated as void for Philippine purposes when either partner is a Filipino citizen.
